Department Vision

At St. Gabriel’s Primary School, we shape our young Gabrielites into confident, future-ready problem solvers through an inclusive and technology-driven mathematical journey.

Our department vision is anchored on three core pillars:

Pedagogical Approach & Core Curriculum

1. Joyful, Active, and Meaningful Learning

To bring mathematics to life beyond text formulas, our school curriculum integrates dynamic, real-world instruction mapped across all levels:

• Math in the News: Implemented every semester across the levels. These activities deliberately infuse critical mathematical reasoning strategies alongside National Education (NE) messages and foundational Financial Literacy.

• Active Learning Experiences: Kinesthetic, tactile activities designed to be infused directly into the curriculum. These experiences anchor abstract calculations into tangible, moving realities.

• 5 Practices for Orchestrating Meaningful Math Discussions: Teachers implement this instructional framework to guide classroom dialogue, elevating students’ reasoning and deepening underlying conceptual clarity.

2. EdTech Capabilities

Technology serves as a primary capability multiplier to advance students’ engagement, motivation, and self-directed competence in the modern digital landscape:

• Interactive Formative Assessment: EdTech tools such as ClassPoint are infused directly into PowerPoint slides to secure immediate formative checks on understanding.

• Tailored Digital Practice: KooBits assignments are selectively distributed at the conclusion of every topic. Higher-Order Thinking (HOT) problems are intentionally targeted to Higher Ability (HA) students to consistently stretch individual potential.

• Blended Centralized Resources: Student Learning Space (SLS) instructional videos and curated digital activities are utilized for every topic.

1. Differentiated Learning Ecosystem

We believe in establishing an inclusive environment that embraces diverse learning needs through precise, data-informed instruction:

• Learning Support for Mathematics (LSM): An early intervention framework providing focused, small-group support to ensure foundational mathematical mastery for selected P1 to P4 students.

• Pull-Out and Remedial Classes: Differentiated learning support through focused remedial and pull-out classes for P5 and P6 students.

• The Math Corner: Interactive mathematical hubs integrated directly into Primary 1 classrooms, enriching our youngest students' appreciation of numbers through collaborative games and play-based activities.

2. Nurturing High-Ability Learners (HAL)

For students displaying exceptional mathematical aptitude, we provide rigorous pathways to stretch thinking limits and cultivate advanced problem-solving dispositions:

• The E2K Mathematics Programme: An inquiry-focused curriculum seamlessly infused directly into the Primary 4 to Primary 6 LMM Curriculum. To build a blended learning experience, segments of these advanced E2K lessons are uploaded onto the SLS, encouraging self-directed exploration and creating valuable classroom time for productive, higher-level mathematical discussions.

• Non-Routine Problem Exposure: Early introduction to non-routine mathematical scenarios to stretch conceptual understanding and teach creative lateral thinking.

• National Mathematical Competitions: Competitions opportunities are provided for high-ability students to test their skills against national standards, including:

  • Raffles Mathematics Olympiad (RMO)

  • National Mathematical Olympiad of Singapore (NMOS)

  • Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad for Primary School (APMOPS)

  • Primary Mathematics Project Competition (Organised by GEB)

3. Interdisciplinary Aesthetics Integration

We bridge the gap between math and creative arts through vibrant, cross-departmental collaborations. Our Art with Math curriculum allows students to directly apply core mathematical concepts, like symmetry, geometric nets, and 3D figures to design beautiful, physical art pieces.

4. Authentic Learning Journeys

In partnership with the Science Department, we get students out of the classroom to experience the application of mathematics in everyday environments. Our Primary 3 students embark on a learning journey to the zoo to experience a specialized out-of-classroom journey focusing on the practical application of money in real-world contexts.

Parental Partnership

Raising every Gabrielite to succeed and thrive in Mathematics is a team effort. We bridge the gap between classroom learning and home support through termly engagement letters, ensuring families stay updated with their child’s mathematical journey.
